The lot in front of the Notre-Dame Basilica served as the backyards of the row houses that existed on St. Patrick Street before the National Gallery took over.
Far from ideal in 1938, the current state of this prime location is not any better when it comes to public space: it should have been a natural extension of the Major Hill Park, but instead it is isolated (and therefore not used as it should be) from the park by the mingling of Murray, St. Patrick, Sussex and Mackenzie avenue.
Note that the segment of Mackenzie avenue from which that picture has been taken no longer exists.
