The convent on Rideau Street could be seen on the left-hand side on the archival photo.  The first phase of the Claridge Plaza occupies now that street corner.  

Back in the days, Waller Street was narrower and experienced less heavy traffic compared to nowadays since it has become the main corridor for trucks through the downtown core.  This causes security issues for pedestrians and cyclists.
