Lowertown East

1894 versus 2013
Lowertown East in Ottawa is a district starting east of  Kind-Edward Avenue and north of Rideau Street. The Rideau River is the northern and eastern physical limits of that district.

The neighbourhood was drastically changed over the last 50 years when the city decided it was ripe for urban renewal.  The route change and the widening of St. Patrick street was also a determining factor for giving a weird and incomplete feel to this area.

The archive photo from 1968 depicts an intersection that no longer exists:  St. Patrick and Cobourg Streets.  Technically, the intersection of Cobourg and St. Patrick still exists but it has been moved to the west to accommodate a curve in Cobourg Street that did not exist back in 1968. ...

Former traditional main street, St. Patrick Street (now Old St. Patrick) is a shell of its former self. Back in the day, St. Patrick had shops and stores, relatively limited in number, but still, enough so that the street was a destination for many residents of the neighbourhoods. ...
